50 Years
The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act
Ground Floor
The ground floor covers the history of wild horses and burros that led to the push to gain federal protections for our wild horses and burros.
A brutal history of mustanging, unenforced laws, “The Misfits” and the commitment of advocates, including Velma Bronn Johnston (Wild Horse Annie), set the stage to gain changes in federal law.
Second Floor
Second floor focuses on the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
50 years ago the Act was passed into law. A visit to the archives to look at the original law and how the media perceived the fight for our American Mustangs.
Third Floor
Third floor features the years immediately after the Act was passed and the last years in the life of “Wild Horse Anne.”
Many thought that the Act meant the work to protect our wild horses was finished. The pioneers that fought for the new law passed away and advocacy moved into the next phase of law and policy.
What has changed? What has stayed the same?
